Which statistics should you track for a handball goalkeeper?
Save percentage is a useful starting point, but it never tells the whole story. Meaningful analysis connects saves to shots faced, zones, match situations and the defensive work of your own team.
The basic calculation
How do you calculate save percentage?
Use a consistent definition so that comparisons between matches and goalkeepers remain reliable.
Save percentage = saves ÷ shots on target faced × 100
Example: 12 saves from 35 shots on target faced produce a 34.3% save percentage.
For consistency, count a shot on target faced when it ends in a goal or a save. Track shots wide and shots against the frame separately.

The overall rate becomes far more useful when it is supported by indicators that explain the conditions in which the goalkeeper intervenes.
Saves and overall efficiency
Record saves, goals conceded and shots on target faced. Check the volume too: a percentage based on five shots remains highly uncertain.
Playing time and shot volume
Connect performance to time spent in goal and the number of shots faced so that you compare genuinely similar periods.
Shot origin and impact
Separate wing shots, six-metre shots, nine-metre shots and seven-metre throws. A zone map reveals strengths and specific areas to work on.
Match situation
Separate organised attack, fast breaks, pressured shots and open one-on-ones. The difficulty of a save depends heavily on the situation created.

Decide before the match what counts as a save, shot on target, zone and situation. Everyone recording the match should apply the same rules.

Segment the results
Compare zones, periods and types of attack. This reveals whether an overall average is hiding a specific strength or difficulty.

Compare trends
Review several matches and sufficient volumes before drawing conclusions. Then connect each finding to an exercise or defensive coordination goal.
A goal conceded is not always a goalkeeper error, just as a save alone does not validate the defensive work. Analyse the quality of the shot allowed and the relationship between defence and goalkeeper.
